Best of Class Winners - Paso Robles Grenache 2015

Congratulations to the crew at Hueneme Wine Company. They just took home a medal for “Best in Class” from the 43rd Annual Cellarmasters Amatuer Winemaking Contest last weekend. The contest was held at the Camarillo Custom Crush and graciously hosted by CCC’s owner John Daum. John also owns the Woodland Hills Beer, Wine and Cheese Making Shop (www.homebeerwinecheese.com) in Woodland Hills which is home the Cellarmasters Home Wine Making Club since its inception.

The contest marked the first time HWC entered any of our wines in any wine making contest. That doesn’t sound too bad for our first time out. We submitted our 2015 Grenache Noir produced from Tom Colburn’s seven acre vineyard in the Adalaida District of Paso Robles, California. Tom grows only Grenache in his vineyard with a few rows reserved for Grenache Blanc.

According to contest sponsor John Daum, they receive about 300 entries every year from across the country. From the results I saw, entries looked a bit light this year but what I did see was wine from Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Tennessee as well as Napa, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Lodi, Stockton, Calaveras, and of course, Paso Robles. It seems HWC beat out at least 6 other Grenache entries from at least three other locations and some from Paso Robles as well. I’m kicking myself for not submitting our Sangiovese as well. Maybe next year.

I would also like to give a big shout out to the three Best in Show winners:

  1. Joe Pauline for his Coffee Port
  2. Paul Boyechlco for his Columbia Valley Merlot
  3. Joe Laws for his Gewurztraminer

Congratulations to all of you! I hope you had as much fun making yours as I had making mine. If you or someone you know is an amateur winemaker, I highly recommend the contest. It’s very affordable to enter, only requires a one bottle submission and is very close to home. Check out: www.cellarmastersla.org for more info.
